FEMA has recently changed the flood maps, which will affect many homeowners in the greater Charleston area. Those who may not have been required to carry flood insurance on their property before may now be included in the “high risk” floodplain.
“The ultimate goal is protecting property owners and the community from the risks associated with flooding. Over time, flood risks change due to construction and development, environmental changes, floodplain widening or shifting, and other factors. Flood maps are updated periodically to reflect these changes. By law, federally regulated or insured mortgage lenders require flood insurance on properties that are located in area at high risk of flooding.”
In response, Charleston County is holding 3 open houses so homeowners can come to ask questions and better understand how this new map will affect them.
